My Favorite Albums from the past decade.
Here is my highly biased list of my personal favorite albums from this decade.  These are the CD’s that are almost always in my car even though I try to rotate through my way to big CD collection.  Well loved and possibly over played, these are the albums that grabbed my attention and have never let go: Black Eyes – Black Eyes (2002) Spoon – Kill the Moonlight (2002) A Band of...

End point of the night: the thought process for the art is more important than what is actually made which is why Duchamp stopped making art. Also: My aunt, brother, cousin, and myself all hate Thomas Kinkade. My brother, cousin, and I also dislike Shepard Fairey. My aunts hates Andy Warhol and pop art. I dislike Damien Hirst; my brother likes his work, and the other two have no opinion. We...

thebigspoonnoless: “I created a system of marketing compatible with American art,” Kinkade said to me recently. “I believe in ‘aspire to’ art. I want my work to be available but not common. I want it to be a dignified component of everyday life. It’s good to dream about things. It’s like dreaming of owning a Rolex; instead, you dream about owning a seventy-five-thousand-dollar print.” art as...

I took a big bag of clothes to Plato’s Closet to try to get some money to buy a few Christmas gifts for my family.  My sister told me that I didn’t need to worry about getting them anything since I’m unemployed. (That is very nice of them.) I still want to get everybody something at least.  Oddly enough, Plato’s Closet bought a couple pairs of Old Navy jeans from me, but...

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=121576791 NPR has been playing a series of work on the furniture work has shifted from N.C. to China. One of the most telling points from this story is how the guy in N.C. “made more than $15 an hour” before he lost his job. I’m assuming that he got benefits such as vacation days and health insurance. Whereas the person doing the same job in...

I took my grandmom to get Chinese food for dinner last night.  She turns 92 in a few weeks, and she is heavily considering giving up driving.  She doesn’t drive that much now anyway—only around downtown Greenville. Anyway, it is kind of awkward to play the in the bed game with your grandmother, so here is my fortune from last night:  Now is the time for you to be spontaneous....

“It is no surprise to me that hardly anyone tells the truth about how they feel....”
– Henry Rollins (via owlatthemoon) I think the problem has to do with trust. You have to be willing to put yourself at risk of being hurt and just take the plunge. I don’t know the rest of what Henry Rollins said around this quote. He does like to talk a lot with his spoken word shows, so maybe...

Public Option Paradox
keepyourselfwarm: So it seems more and more likely that we’re not going to get a public option passed which poses the following paradox in my life: Health care reform without a public option makes me want to beat my head against my desk, BUT HOW CAN I AFFORD TO BEAT MY HEAD AGAINST THE DESK WITHOUT A PUBLIC OPTION?!

I finally got around to trying Pandora internet radio this week.  I like it so far.  The results are a little odd sometimes.  I wish I knew more about how the algorithm and the subjective judging from listeners are used to pick my songs.  I’m thinking I should just build stations based on specific songs instead of an artist.  My first station was built around the band Black Eyes.  I really...

art sale
Yesterday was a very good day.  The art sale went pretty well.  Some people I know drove from Greenville to see the show; that was really very nice of them.  It meant a lot to me see and talk to them.  Also, I sold some work yesterday!  An older guy came by my table four times to look at my work, and was really talkative each time.  On the fourth time, he bought something.  He also told me that he...

A tribute to riot grrrl and all girl post punk...
It seems that I’m a little behind on the news. Earlier this week, I found out that Mika Miko broke up this year. Mika Miko played their last show near the beginning of November.  Mika Miko has been on my short list of favorite bands for the past couple of years.  After finding out that bad news, I decided to do a tribute show to all girl post punk bands and riot grrrl bands.  I did a pretty...

http://www.toomuchjoy.com/?p=1397 I’m just going to copy the first couple paragraphs as a teaser: “I got something in the mail last week I’d been wanting for years: a Too Much Joy royalty statement from Warner Brothers that finally included our digital earnings.
