Work
There is a lot that I dislike about my current underemployment such as how I miss having responsibility and the whole not really earning anything aspect of an almost minimum wage job.  But, there are a few things that I do enjoy about my job. One of the best if somewhat intangible benefit of my job as a cashier is that I get to witness beautiful sunrises five days a week, though I do have to get...

On Early Warning Signs →
Science is a creative human enterprise. Discoveries are made in the context of our creations: our models and hypotheses about how the world works. Big failures, however, can be a wake-up call about entrenched views, and nothing produces humility or gains attention faster than an event that blindsides so many so immediately. Examples of catastrophic and systemic changes have been gathering in a...

Algorithms Take Control of Wall Street →
givemesomethingtoread: Over the past decade, algorithmic trading has overtaken the industry. From the single desk of a startup hedge fund to the gilded halls of Goldman Sachs, computer code is now responsible for most of the activity on Wall Street. (By some estimates, computer-aided high-frequency trading now accounts for about 70 percent of total trade volume.) Increasingly, the market’s ups...

OK Go's Damian Kulash on the Future of the Music... →
Music is getting harder to define again. It’s becoming more of an experience and less of an object. Without records as clearly delineated receptacles of value, last century’s rules—both industrial and creative—are out the window. For those who can find an audience or a paycheck outside the traditional system, this can mean blessed freedom from the music industry’s gatekeepers.

metanoiamuseum: I would find you to be an exception, a man who is closest to a linear form of thinking than anyone I know, forever traveling forward and aft; and yet, I find you to be a man assuming a most arbitrary form of living, burrowing himself in the child he used to be and peering out old and weathered from the years. Your words lead you (and me) astray. Our heads are in clouds while our...

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/16/science/16synthetic.html?_r=1&ref=science The president’s bioethics commission says there is no need to temporarily halt research or to impose new regulations on the controversial new field known as  synthetic biology. In a report being issued Thursday, the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues says that at present the technology —...

Murder Music →
givemesomethingtoread: Dancehall is hugely controversial—inside and outside Jamaica. Detractors echo many of the same complaints voiced against American hip-hop, including that the music promotes misogyny and violence. But the brief against dancehall far exceeds criticism inveighed against any other genre of popular music. Dancehall is a crucible for Jamaica’s irreconcilable notions of class...

The store manager had me talk to a group of recent high school graduates today that were on a tour of Home Depot provided by a job training program that Goodwill provides to people.  Those five minutes were the most fun I had today.  I really enjoy talking in front of a group of people and answering questions.  I miss doing that on a regular occurrence like I used to do years ago. If you were a DJ...

New Book
I just finished Lake with No Name by Diane Wei Liang.  I found it very interesting especially since a lot of the history classes that I took at Clemson were modern Asian History. This book would have been a very good addition to the book list when I took Modern Chinese History a few years ago. I’ve been looking through the best of 2010 book lists on NPR’s site today. now I really...

New CD Racks
I am no longer buying between four and ten albums a month like back in my extreme CD buying days when I was Music Director for WSBF FM Clemson. Even though my crass commercialism has toned down some, I still average one to two albums a month.   I built a new CD rack today. Now I can clean up that other CD rack and this corner cabinet.

In Tapes, Nixon Rails About Jews and Blacks
An indication of Nixon’s complex relationship with Jews came the afternoon Golda Meir, the Israeli prime minister, came to visit on March 1, 1973. The tapes capture Meir offering warm and effusive thanks to Nixon for the way he had treated her and Israel. But moments after she left, Nixon and Mr. Kissinger were brutally dismissive in response to requests that the United States press the ...
