Post

Today a coworker of mine, who I have worked with for about six months, asked me if English was my second language. He actually said, “I’m not trying to be a jerk, but is English your second language?” (If you feel the need to say that you are not trying to be a jerk or asshole, you are probably being a jerk or asshole.)  I told him that English is my native language. Then he asked me if I had lived abroad or if my parents are from another country.

I have lived my entire life within a 40 mile radius of the hospital that I was born in. It is funny to think that I sound like an outsider to other people from the upstate of SC.  It is not uncommon for people to ask me if I am from England.   I guess having years of speech classes and a slight southern accent makes you sound British.
